Penang govt to look at alternative water sources
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government needs a Water Resources
Master Plan to ensure the state continues to have undisrupted water
supply for another 50 years.
Wong Hon Wai (DAP - Air Itam) said the state must also look to other
water sources, such as Sungai Kerian at the border of the state with
Perak, apart from Sungai Muda that flows from Kedah.
He said other strategies like creating more water catchment areas, new
treatment plants, desalination, rain water harvesting, recycling and
education programmes for the people to encourage water saving should be
looked into as well.
"I welcome the chief minister's recent announcement that there is a
proposal to appoint a consultant to see how our water supply
infrastructure can be optimised.
"I hopre the state can also inform the house how much water reserve we
have in Penang and what plans we have for the next 50 years," he said,
citing concerns that a water crisis could also happen here like in the
Klang Valley.
Wong also supported the state's stand not to pay raw water charges to
Kedah for drawing water from Sungai Muda, citing the Riparian Water
Rights.
"The issue of payment does not arise, unlike what Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir is saying," he said.

（槟城3日讯）亚依淡区州议员黄汉伟律师指责吉打州务大臣慕克里“师承”老爸敦马哈迪，学到老爸在担任首相时与新加坡就水供问题上对新加坡的强硬调高收费的立场。
黄汉伟是在议会内针对元首施政演词后在记者会上指出，他在较早时在议会内支持州政府的立场反对吉打州向槟州政府收取慕达河生水费，他表示，根据英国普通法下 的水权（Riparisan Water Rights），所有边界上的水供是共享的，所以吉打州不该向槟城州收取生水费，以免威胁槟州的未来生存。
他表示，在马新供水事件上前首相敦马哈迪以强硬的立场向新加坡提高供水收费，所以他相信其子慕克里也学习老爸一套，因此槟州政府对比事件不可掉以轻心。
此外他也炮轰槟州反对党巫统在此课题上竟没有立场。

与此同时他认为槟州政府必须拟定50年的水资源大蓝图，除了现有慕达河，可探讨从霹雳州与槟城边界的吉辇获取水供。他希望掌管槟州基本设施水供的行个体户议员可向议会报告槟州有多少的水资源以及未来50年的计划
